Charlie's farm
was 2-3 miles to the west. "Bill" and Betty died of pneumonia, only three days apart at the ages of 43 and 39. After a double funeral, they were buried at Wilson Cemetery. Since Charlie had left home, Leander at 20 yrs old was now the "man of the house" with his siblings which included two under 4 yrs old.

The feeling I get when I see the eyes of an ancestor is hard to explain but always "unique". Russell kinda looks like him and so does Clifford but I was wrong once or twice before :-). Both Russell and Clifford are powerful and loyal so I'm guessing "Bill" was too. I found this on facebook: Marshall County / Cann-Woods-Vasseur Families by West Kentucky Genealogy. At right is Dad, Mom, Leander's son Joseph Taft Solomon, Grandmother Bess Alice Peters Solomon, Granny Grace Ferrell Peters and Okey with Alicia in the arms of Dad (Philip Barbee):

The details from the family tree link are:

Name: William Thomas SOLOMON
Birth: 11 Jul 1849 in Trigg Co, KY
Death: 30 Jan 1892 in Marshall Co, KY
Burial: Wilson Cemetery, Benton, KY
Father: Jesse SOLOMON b: 19 Sep 1822
Mother: Rebecca ANDERSON b: 20 Apr 1826

Marriage 1 Tersdia (Tisa) Ann(e) Elizabeth (Betty) NOLES b: 30 Aug 1853 in VA. In no particular order, Karson, Thomas, Ryan, Audrey, Annie, Tyler and Tacoa found the only way to get really rid of the dirt collected on the farm is to take a swim at the Comfort Inn (Wilder/Barbee tab). I got to show off the updates to the log cabin and workshop/garage barn with lots of help from Tyler and Aunt Linda. The workshop had to be built before 1860 since the main house was finished in 1857. c 1850 is my guess concerning it's age. These young men and women (and Karson) helped me paint the rain barrels, play monopoly, eat bacon and egg sandwiches, add artwork to log cabin, swim and generally have a great vacation. I can't wait til the next time we all can get together.

World Equestrian Games - Part III

October 4, 2010 was one fantabulous day. Ryan and the Friendship Vaulting Team USA entertained a large group (mostly children) in the Equine Village after autographing my fancy WEG hat in the morning. Tyler and I then checked out many other booths and demonstrations until Speed Jumping started in the main outdoor stadium. This event (Center Ring seats always helps) is non-stop action with a horse/rider starting every 80 seconds to attempt 12 jumps for 3+ hours. Only 25% made all 12 jumps "clean" while the others banged into poles, stopped short of jump, splashed into water or just took their time and enjoyed the view. A great day start to finish:

World Equestrian Games - Part II

Yep, we had lots of fun watching the Friendship Vaulting Team USA practice in Lancaster, KY at Meadow Lake Horse Park.

World Equestrian Games - Part I

Mom and I had a great visit with Ryan last night in Athens, KY just south of Lexington. Ryan's invitation to join the Friendship Vaulting Team USA is another feather in her expanding cap. The accommodations at the Blue Grass Christian Camp and Retreat Center should provide a nice place to relax between demonstrations at the Kentucky Horse Park during the World Equestrian Games and downtown Lexington's International Equestrian Festival. We also got a chance to meet some very nice friends of Ryan from Washington State (Seattle) and South Africa (Pretoria).

Since we plan to see Ryan at the Horse Park, I also scored some Center Ring tickets for the Speed Jumping event on Monday, October 4th at 2:30. After my great friend and golfing buddy, Tom Belt, drives me down to Horse Cave to get Tyler, we should enjoy seeing a completely different sport we know absolutely nothing about in the recently built main outdoor stadium. But it's tough to turn away from HBO's exhaustive and bracing look at the illness through the lives of people enduring it and the scientific breakthroughs that could change everything.

"The Alzheimer's Project" marks the third time HBO Documentary Films has made a focused attempt at public health education. In 2000, there was the Peabody Award-winning series "Cancer: Evolution to Revolution," followed by the "Addiction" series in 2007.

About 50 million people accessed the "Addiction" series via TV, the Internet and a companion book, series producer John Hoffman said, a number that HBO executives considered staggering. So producers quickly looked for other health issues that might warrant a series that could fill gaps in public health education and help raise money for scientific research.

David Patrick Schmidt

David passed away a few days ago and will be missed dearly. I knew David over 40+ years and never heard a negative word spoken about him or seen him without a great attitude about life. He always had a funny story, loved the game of golf, and most importantly, enjoyed the "companionship" with two beautiful women in Mary Lou and most recently Chris along with his family and friends, it seemed to me. Here is the Obit from the Courier-Journal yesterday:

BOWLING GREEN SCHMIDT, DAVID PATRICK, 80, died May 1, 2009, at his home. He was born in Paducah, KY to the late William A. and Maude Schmidt. David was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy and attended Paducah Junior College. In 1950, he entered the United States Army serving as a Tech. Sgt. in the 101st Airborne Division on Okinawa. He was discharged in 1952. In 1955, he joined his brother-in-law, J. Paul Saunders, as a salesman and later became sole owner of the sales and marketing company covering six Southeastern states. In 1957 he married Mary Lou Houser Cromer and together they raised two wonderful daughters. Davis was very active in his industry, serving as president of the Louisville Automotive Booster Club. He was also a member of several industry associations. He was president of the Southern Automotive show in Atlanta, GA in 1978. David retired in 1995 after selling his marketing company, he was then able to pursue his passion for golf. David played golf for 65 years, winning several trophies and prizes. He won three senior trophies, the latest in 2005, when he was 77 years old. He was a member of Indian Hills Country Club from 1979 until his death. Indian Hills became his second home after the passing of Mary Lou, January, 2006. They were married for 48 years. The Indian Hills friends became his new family. David was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. David had many friends and one hobby, sending birthday cards and anniversary cards. On April 5, 2008, David married Christine Shugars of Maysville, KY. She was married to Bill Shugars for 53 years until he passed away. The Schmidts and Shugars were friends for over 40 years and Chris was a very special friend of Mary Lou. David was a devoted husband, a loving father, a fun loving grandfather and a good man. Survivors include his wife, Christine Shugars-Schmidt, Bowling Green; daughters, Lesley Cromer Rooks, Lecanto, FL and Anita Cromer Trullinger, Princeton, NJ; sister, Mary Frances Galvin (Tommy), Paducah; two grandsons, David Christopher Rooks, Frankfort, KY and Bradley Patrick Trullinger, New York, NY; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Schmidt; and sisters, Margaret Ann Saunders and Better Beyer. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A graveside service will be held at Benton Cemetery, Benton, KY at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday following the Mass. Visitation is 3-6:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, at J.C. Kirby & Son, Lovers Lane Chapel. A prayer service will also be held at 6:30 p.m. following the visitation. Funeral is 1 o'clock August 4th (51st wedding anniversay with Aunt Linda) at Horse Cave Christian Church. Joseph Aldridge Burks was born in Horse Cave on 9/23/1934 and is buried in Horse Cave Cemetery and survived by his wife Linda (Linda Grace Solomon Burks), son Joseph Aldridge Burks, Jr. (Jay) and daughter Laura Lee Burks.

He treated me like a son and my children like his grandchildren. He loved his family with all his might and enjoyed giving everything he had to the ones more needy around him. Sharp in mind to the last day (he woke up feeling not fair, but "pretty good"), his last concern to me was what to get Aunt Linda for their anniversary. I love him and will miss him beyond measure. Obituary

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kyblue.blogspot.com/2008/08/joseph-aldridge-burks.html' title='Joseph A. I made it to the District 28 Tournament where the team from Camden Catholic dominated the public schools (they are ranked in top 50 (30?) in Nation) and Russell got second place. He joined 5 other team-mates who made it to the Regional Tourney in Moorestown but none of them made it to the State tourney either. Haddon Township's coach Chris Hoffman was named Outstanding Coach for the District also. I had a great trip to the Philadelphia(Cherry Hill, NJ) area and plan to go back for the regionals next year. Tyler and I had a blast watching Russell wrestle and enjoyed some great time together at the movies and out to dinner while Russell kept his mind focused on wrestling. His opponent to get to the District finals had beaten him twice so the 2-1 decision was hard fought (he'll be back next year, too). It was great to see his other team-mates do well also. The State Tournament is this weekend in Atlantic City.

No big news here in Horse Cave. The Hawks finished fifth in the team race."

Aunt Linda and Uncle Joe on their way to the LifeSkills Christmas Party in Bowling Green last night.
